Description

Students will review Present Simple, Past Simple, and Present Continuous. They will discuss in pairs when each tense is used, do some grammar exercises on the TL, then practice reading and speaking about two athletes while using the TL.

  • To review and practice present simple, past simple, and present continuous in the context of unusual athletes.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To reintroduce myself while providing modal phrases for the TL taken from the previous lesson.

Introduce Yourself. Write the affirmative sentences with time phrase gaps on the WB. Ask them where they have seen these sentences before and elicit that they are from the reading in the previous lesson.

Highlight the TL (1-2 minutes) • get students to think when they are supposed to use different tenses.

Do ex. 5 together and fill in the time phrase gaps. Elicit the verb tenses for each sentence.

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • Get students to understand when each of the TL tenses is used.

Handout adapted from English Unlimited p.132 will be given to each student. Working in pairs the students will have to work out the meaning themselves and determine which tense matches the description. WCFB to check the right answers followed by CCQs True/False We are learn English right now. False The sun rises in the east. True In Istanbul there was snow in Istanbul. True 1 plus 1 is equalling two. False Spring comes after winter. True For Form: Do ex6 on the WB. WCFB. Elicit the form briefly. For pronunciation: Highlight what words are stressed and drill a few phrases.

Controlled Practice (7-8 minutes) • Get students to practice using the TL.

Handout a copy of Ex.1 p.132 for each student. Have them work on it individually then check their answers in pairs. Then do a WCFB.

Preparation for Reading/Speaking (3-4 minutes) • Generate interest in the content.

Pin the two pictures of the athlete on the WB. Ask students to makes guesses about the people in those photos.

Reading (8-10 minutes) • Get students to think of read the text, think which tense fits each sentence, and practice speaking the TL in pairs.

Handout papers of the same color to people sitting next to each other. In pairs let students answer the questions. Give out the answer key to students. The answer key matches color with the handout.

Semi-Controlled Practice (7-10 minutes) • Speaking/Listening practice using the TL tenses.

Re-pair students so they are paired with students with a different colored handout. Let them share information with each other about the athletes WITHOUT looking at each others papers. Ask them to find similarities between the two athletes. Elicit the similarities in FB. Do some error correction on the WB of errors collected during the speaking activity.

Alternative to Panic Mode Class filler. (5-7 minutes) • extra pronunciation drills

choose some words from the text and write them on WB. As a whole class do pronunciation class drills.
