Description

In this lesson, students practice suffixes and learn job terminology. The emphasis will be on job titles that have suffixes. If time permits, students will do a crossword puzzle. This will help broaden their knowledge of job terminology.

Main Aims

Subsidiary Aims

  • 1. To give students more speaking practice in the context of jobs 2. To focus on the stress shift in some words 3. To learn the purpose of suffixes in the English language

Procedure

Warmer/ Lead In (5-7 minutes) • To set the context of jobs in the class and engage the students

- Ask the students to tell me what suffixes are and what they are used for - Ask the students what I do: "What do I do? What is my job?" - Elicit the word formation of: teach: teacher - Show the images and elicit the jobs displayed

Language Focus (5-7 minutes) • Word formation in the context of jobs

- Vocabulary exercise 2. The students will answer the 9 questions and complete the exercise - After they finish, they may check their answers in a dictionary if time permits - Drill the new words chorally and individually

Language Focus 2 (5-7 minutes) • Word formation in the context of jobs

- Divide the students in pairs and ask them to come up with other examples of jobs with suffixes - Drill chorally and individually

Language Focus 3 (5-7 minutes) • Word formation in the context of jobs

- Listening session: make the students listen to 1.53 as a feedback of what they have just learned - Focus on stress changes if they occur - Drill chorally and individually

Follow Up (10-15 minutes) • To learn more vocabulary in the context of jobs

- Divide the students in pairs and distribute the crossword puzzle - Ask each pair to do either across or down - Share the answers with the class - Drill chorally and individually
